Step into the golden age of Old Malaya with Mawar Putih Mawar Merah, Red Rose, White Rose. A bold new immersive musical that reimagines the beloved folktale Bawang Putih Bawang Merah like you’ve never seen before.

Proudly brought to you by Krate Creative Space, this original experience unfolds at Rumah Melaka, Bukit Katil; a cherished heritage home that celebrates local artistry and tradition in the heart of Melaka.

For two nights only, Rumah Melaka in Bukit Katil opens its doors to a full-sensory theatre experience, where the charm of this heritage home sets the stage for Mawar Putih Mawar Merah, a live musical that brings history to life within its very walls.

Expect dance, live music, drama, and nostalgia as you’re transported into a 1950s Malaya dreamscape where kampung gossip meets silver-screen glamour. With immersive storytelling, Mawar Putih Mawar Merah takes you on a heartfelt journey through love, friendship, and forgiveness.

Presented primarily in Malay and English, with a touch of Peranakan lingo, the performance remains accessible to all, with English subtitles provided.

MEET THE CAST

Merah

Mak Kundur’s spoiled daughter, Merah is sharp-tongued, defensive and often echoes her mother’s harshness. Played by Andi Zepyhr, Merah is a symbol of jealousy, distorted influence, and the possibility of change. Her world is turned upside down as she navigates what her true values are.

Andi Zephyr is a versatile artist who has been performing since a young age. Currently the frontman of Thawr, a hardcore band, Andi is also exploring solo music on the side. Art is a lifelong passion, and she’s committed to continuing to create and perform for years to come.

Mak Kundur

A loud, cunning, and commanding matriarch, Mak Kundur is the controlling mother of Merah. Driven by greed and jealousy, she masks her insecurity with cruelty towards the ones closest to her. Played by Neena Shu, her obsession with wealth and control over the household pushes her to extremes.

Neena Shu is a multi-talented artist who specialises in dance, she has been involved in the performing arts industry since 2012 and a key member of Krate since 2020.

Putih

A kind-hearted and resilient girl, Putih represents all that Merah questions. Upon her arrival in Malaya, She enters the household as an outsider but maintains her kindness and humility despite being mistreated. Played by Bethany Bala, Putih’s compassion, grace, and quiet strength touches even the coldest hearts around her.

With experience in speech and drama classes, Bethany Bala will be making her theatrical debut as Putih. This is her first production with Krate.

Doris

Mak Kundur’s soft and helpful friend. Doris used to be Kundur’s neighbour back when they were in town. Despite being bossed around, Doris maintains her cool through the years. Played by Shyre May, she tries her best to support her only friend, Kundur.

Shyre May is the Founder of Krate – A Creative Space and Cafe which focuses on the performing arts community based in Melaka. Recently trained in NYC and with 10 years of experience in the industry, she has written, produced, directed and acted in many original plays, commercials and independent films.

Raja

A calm and composed lawyer representing Baba Tan and Aiman. Encik Raja acts as the voice of reason and legality in the chaos, often the bearer of difficult truths. Played by Cassian Anthony, his presence influences major turning points in the story, especially Putih’s legitimacy and inheritance.

Cassian Anthony is a Criminal Lawyer by profession and a theatre enthusiast, specialising in acting and writing. He has written, acted, directed and staged more than 6 local theatre performances.

Tok Lapar

The mystical, eerie, and theatrical shaman with a flair for the dramatics. Tok La Par is feared for his power and presence. Played by Allan Wan, he serves as a cautionary figure, illustrating the dark consequences of jealousy and manipulation.

Allan Wan Lai Yuan, a passionate performer of Peranakan heritage, has been active in the performing arts since 2005 and is best known for his role as “Bibik Huat Neo.” He has performed in numerous theatre productions across Melaka and Singapore, blending acting, singing, and traditional dances to celebrate and preserve Peranakan culture.

Madam Fang

The elegant and powerful owner of Starlight Club, Madam Fang is a mother figure to the lost and unwanted. Played by Tracy Anne, she offers refuge, structure, and confidence to women who have nowhere else to go.

Tracy Anne Sta. Maria is a performing arts enthusiast with a passion for fashion. This will be her fourth acting/theatre production in the span of two years.

Starlight Sisters

A trio of glamorous, gritty, and spirited women. Survivors who were once abandoned but found family under Madam Fang’s care. Played by Sonia Lee, Kimberly Chan, and Janey Shairan, each of them has a past marked by pain but now shines with resilience and artistry.

Sonia Lee is a seasoned actor with more than 5 years of acting experience in Krate’s original productions. She is also a professional copywriter in advertising, and has been involved with Krate’s growth since 2019.

Kimberley Chan debuted as an actor in 2022 for The Best Nyonya and after multiple shows with Krate, she is back! An illustrator by profession, she has commissioned and published works that have appeared in international publications and online platforms.

Janey Shairan, a performer who began her journey with traditional dancing and grew into theatre and contemporary arts. Passionate about storytelling through movement and emotion, she is now on her 4th production with Krate.

MEET THE CREWS

Yohan Nadav

Yohan Nadav, also known as The Music Guy (TMG), is a passionate music creator, performer, and producer dedicated to bringing unforgettable sounds to life. From intimate acoustic sets to large-scale productions, TMG blends technical expertise with heartfelt artistry. With a growing portfolio of performances, recordings, and creative projects, The Music Guy continues to push boundaries, innovate, and share the joy of music with the world.

Benjamin Yong

A founding member of Krate, Benjamin is passionate about music and the technicalities of stage production, specialising in light and sound.

Roland Williams

Roland Williams is a Mechanical Engineer passionate about solving problems through innovative solutions in the semiconductor line. He is also a keyboardist and vocalist who brings creativity and emotion to every performance.

Nic

Former student in Aswara, performer and music teacher. A guitarist and tradisional malay instrument (gamelan) player, This will be Nic’s first musical as the guitarist.

Raymark Teo

Raymark Teo is an Electrical Engineer who dedicates his heart to whatever he does. He is a drummer who aspires to connect people with his playing just as how connected he is with his instrument, and a sound engineer who makes sure the sound goes through well for people to be engaged.

MJ Gan

MJ began her journey in theatre as a backstage crew member for Krate Production’s The Case of the Missing Diamond in 2023. She now oversees scheduling, production, and stage management.

Jevin Kumar

Working as a professional events photographer and videographer, Jevin is multi-talented with a degree in Engineering and 2 years of acting experience with Krate.

Aim

Aim working as a professional video editor and cameraman with 9 years experience thru production, social media and live tv broadcasting background. And this is his first time joining Krate backstage crew.

Skye Falcon

Skye is a theatre junkie with more than 5 Krate theatre productions, starting out as a cast member of Krate Kids and Darios, the first ever original play by Krate.

Caroline Ho

A student in mechanical engineering, Caroline is equipped with hands on skills and the ability to adapt to changing situations. This is her first time as a backstage crew.

Penny

Penny, law student, who enjoys learning new things and taking on new challenges. Mawar Putih Mawar Merah is her first stepping stone into the theatre world as a backstage crew.

Ashley Lim

A law student who loves trying new things and being part of fun experiences, Ashley is excited to join the crew for this musical. She looks forward to creating great memories with everyone involved in the event.

Ryan

A drummer from 24 festive drum, Ryan got his own unique view on performance art based on his 10 years of on-stage experience. Although this is his first time participating as a stage crew, he is ready to learn and expand his circle.

Based in Melaka and established in 2016, Krate Creative Space is a theatre production company specializing in interactive and immersive performances that highlight cultural elements. With more than 10 plays under its belt, Krate continues to inspire and support local artists while contributing to the growth of the performing arts industry in Melaka.

THE BEST NYONYA (2022-2025)

Step into the opulent world of Peranakan culture with The Best Nyonya, an unforgettable theatrical experience where you don’t just watch the story unfold—you become a part of it.

From the creative minds behind The Missing Diamonds at The Baba Nyonya Museum Melaka (2023) and the recent standout production The Great Gossip (2024), The Best Nyonya is the most iconic musical comedy drama written and directed by Wee Shyre May.

The Best Nyonya was first debut in 2022 in an outdoor festival in Melaka that garnered a total of 2000 attendees and since then has been performed in KL, Sold Out shows in immersive dining experience and even restaged in Melaka (2024) with a total cast and crew of 32 people and more than 600 viewers from all walks of life.

supported by YB Khoo Office Kota Melaka.

Set in the roaring 1920’s, catch a glimpse of the life, love and lies of Melaka’s own
“Crazy Rich Asians” of Millionaire’s Row (Heeren Street)!
Featuring John Chua, the most Eligible Bachelor in town, who is hosting an exclusive, private house-warming party at Heeren Mansion and only elites high society, such as yourself, are invited. But, what seems like a glamorous soiree turns into a scandalous affair.
